The story

Legends’ of the Scotch Whisky industry are few and far between. Many are known globally whilst a few sit more quietly in the background. One man who sits firmly in the latter category is David Boyd.

The Eorna Oir range of whiskies has been chosen by David to represent and showcase a ‘Lifetime in Whisky’. His life.

Ayrshire born and bred, he grew up in Kilmarnock, the spiritual home of Johnnie Walker – the ‘Striding Man’. As a major employer in the town, many locals found work in the busy blending and bottling halls so there can be no doubt this sowed the seed which led to the career that Eorna Oir celebrates.

He started working in the early 1980s at White Heather Distillers (Pernod Ricard) as a blending analyst, where he was schooled in the dark and mysterious art of whisky production. After several years training in whisky stock management, blending, distillation planning and wood management, he was appointed Chief Blender at the renamed Campbell Distillers, responsible for the Clan Campbell, White Heather and House of Lords blends as also the Aberlour and Edradour Single Malts.

In 2002 Pernod Ricard acquired part of the Seagram spirits business and David was appointed Deputy Production Director for a portfolio which now included Chivas Regal, Royal Salute, 100 Pipers and the Glenlivet and Glen Grant Single Malts. By 2005 David was responsible for several million maturing casks in over 200 warehouses and across 13 distilleries.

In his blending heyday, David’s contemporaries at other companies were such Scotch Whisky luminaries as Richard Paterson, David Stewart, Jim McEwan, Bill Lumsden and Ian Macmillan to name but a few. He also worked closely with the legendary Billy Walker on several distillery projects including GlenAllachie. He respectfully pays tribute to them for the role they played in his remarkable career.

Of the whiskies he helped create he is most proud of Clan Campbell Legendary a sublime 18 year old blend. It is however the amazing Aberlour A’ bunadh that he is perhaps best known for.

“EACH REGIONAL LABEL OF EORNA OIR FEATURES PAINTINGS BY SCOTTISH ARTIST MICHAEL CORSAR, DUNDEE DUNCAN OF JORDANSTONE COLLEGE OF ART ALUMNI FROM CLASS OF 1996. CORSAR SPECIALISES IN WORKING FROM MEMORY, HIS PAINTINGS REFLECTING HIS INNER THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS RATHER THAN SPECIFIC PLACES. DAVID HAS UTILISED CORSARS WORKS TO CREATE A VISUAL OF THE FIVE WHISKY REGIONS.”
“Whisky making is an artform and on seeing Michaels works I was struck by how he had captured true essence of the Scottish landscape mirroring the essential elements of whisky making; water, barley and nature reflecting in flavour.”

Each one strongly shows the essence of the region, Highland depicting purple heather tones, Islay showing a dark and stormy scene and Lowland showing a glimmer of industrial light. In each painting lies a commonality which is the sun breaking through with sunsets casting a golden light onto the water below.

David formally retired in 2018 but like all whisky icons the spirit is in his DNA and so he continues to put his stamp on an industry he has served for forty years. In his initial release of Eorna Oir he has selected from his private cask collection three whiskies that for varying reasons reflect on his ‘Lifetime in Whisky ‘. They evoke the nature and spirit of the man, quiet yet full of personality, soft yet strong in character and full of life. The Eorna Oir series is the culmination of a whisky journey and one that all whisky aficionados will enjoy being on. We look forward to the road ahead.

“I never considered myself to be anything other than a competent whisky maker. I have had the privilege of working with many fabulous distilleries and with a few incredible people. Eorna Oir is as much a testimony to them as it is to me. I truly hope you enjoy tasting the fruits of my labours and the excellence of theirs.”
